A town that has nearly doubled

Athy grew by more than eighty per cent between 2002 and 2022, to about eleven thousand people. Most of those homes are in estates built in the last twenty years, and newer houses go wrong in their own way: cracks along plasterboard joints in the first heating seasons, doors that stop closing as the frames dry out, silicone run quickly at handover, and rooms that came with no shelving, storage or anything on the walls.

The older town around the Barrow and the canal is the other half — terraces and town houses where the work is more often plaster and damp-marked walls than fittings.

I fix snags; I do not write snag reports — that is a surveyor’s job. If you have a report, send it and I will tell you which items are mine and what they cost. Where something is the builder’s to fix under warranty, I will tell you that instead of charging for it.
