Tullow is about fifteen kilometres from Carlow town along the R725, which is close enough that a two-hour job is worth both our time. That is the line that matters for small work, and Tullow is comfortably inside it.

Hourly work is €50 an hour with a two-hour minimum, labour only. Plaster repairs start at €150 and a room painted at €250, in writing before anything is booked.

Two kinds of house in one town

The centre of Tullow is an eighteenth-century street town — the Square and the streets down to the bridge over the Slaney — and the houses there are mostly old solid-wall buildings, often with later extensions on the back. The town has also roughly doubled since the 1800s, and most of that growth is the estates on the roads out, built in plasterboard and block.

They need different things. In the older houses it is usually plaster: damp-stained patches by a chimney breast, a ceiling that has cracked along an old repair, a wall where cement render has been put on something that wanted to breathe. In the estates it is fittings, doors and joints: the list of small things that builds up in a house nobody has had time to get round to.

What I do not do

No gas and no electrical work that needs a registered electrician — I will say so on the first message rather than turn up and find out. Plumbing beyond swapping a tap or a shower head is a plumber’s job too.
